There are many ways to motivate a child. Give him rewards, nice imagination about future, threat about the marks and much more but, not any of them are beneficial for a long term. Either the student develops the habit of getting rewards or he won’t do anything if you don’t offer him/her anything or, the student simply forms a defence against your threats. Either situation is not great for both teachers and students.

The most beautiful and effective way to motivate any student is to persuade him/her intrinsically. Intrinsic motivation refers to behaviour that is driven by internal rewards. As long as a child wants to do something, he’ll love to do it. The reason behind this is the enjoyment he is getting while engaging in that activity. He is not doing it for the sake of receive something in return.

This doesn’t mean that intrinsic motivation comes without any kind of rewards. Instead, these rewards involve positive emotions, the sight of better future or sense of accomplishment.

Share some inspiring real life stories with your students. These can be your personal experiences, experiences with your previous students or some other stories. Tell those stories about famous people success and failure stories. Try to relate those with their life. When you relate stories, you make them more realistic and hence chances are that students will perceive them in a positive way.



Make the whole learning experience alive for your student. Incorporate your students in edification. The very effective way of learning in this type of experiment is problem-based learning. Connect your student to real world problems. Teach them about the benefits of working in a group by making small group among them. By this way, your students will learn both thinking strategies and domain knowledge.



Human beings are born curious. But, this doesn’t mean that we don’t have to spark curiosity in them. Sometimes, students suppress their curiosity out of boredom or fear. Give them that little moment of freedom where they can learn the way they want. Give them time to explore, think and discover. Tell them that it’s okay to raise a question about anything and everything. Engage them in such activities that spark curiosity in them about the subject matter.



As explained earlier, encouragement from an outside is a big no in learning. There are several problems related to extrinsic rewards like they do not produce permanent changes ever, they even reduce intrinsic interest in students or they can be controlling. The extrinsic reward should be completely eliminated from the learning process as they can turn learning from an end into a means.



Knowledge is greater than marks. Of course, marks has their own value but to a limited extent. Teach your students that their goal should be to gain knowledge, not grades. So, for this creates lessons that are free of grades. Don’t restrict them to just books, free them to explore outside the limits of books. By this way, they can learn more than before.



Motivate them by becoming one of them. A student can learn much more through the process of playing a game. Engage them in their favourite game and try to teach them a new concept or idea simultaneously. There are countless skills students can learn through playing like creativity, critical thinking skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship.



Try to surprise your students with something interesting. It can be related to your current topic going on in class or related to any other thing. Present them with some old problem and ask for a new and innovative solution for it. This will improve their critical thinking. Show interest and appreciate them when you recognize that their responses and questions are demonstrating more effective thinking strategies.



An ideal learning environment is made up of many ingredients. Build a positive relationship with your students and their parents from the first day of the school. Try to make a clear communication with them and encourage them to speak their mind. Tell them that they can ask questions whenever they are in doubt. Make sure that they are not afraid of you by indulging with them in their activities. Create a trusting atmosphere in your class for ongoing and effective learning.



Your little praise can do wonders for your student. Your praise shows your approval and informs your student that their work lived up to your expectation. Praise is a powerful tool of motivation which should be used very carefully. Praise your student on real accomplishment and not on every small thing. Always remember, praise their efforts, not the ability. You can praise your student in a private conversation or in front of the full class; just make sure your words don’t hurt other students.



People are motivated by; they care about having meanings in life. A purposeful mindset helps children in discovering the roadblocks in their path of learning. That motivates them to make every little effort to persist and barrel through. So, try to demonstrate, describe and engage your student with a purpose as often as you can.



If you want to create a learner-centered classroom, it is very important to know about your students. In teaching, there are certain points that you should discover about your students like, their learning styles, interests and passion. Having this information will help you in co-operating with them in a better way and teach them in the way they truly understand you.



Encourage your students to accomplish the same task but with creative ways. Create a classroom that recognises creativity and uses the most effective strategies to teach that. You can also design some classroom space for exploration such as thinking table, drama stage where you can discuss ideas with your students.
